Trek leader
The qualified leader of a trek batch, responsible for route, pace, acclimatisation, headcounts and safety decisions on the trail.
What is Trek leader?
Trek leaders combine the captain's operational role with mountain judgement: when to turn a group around, how to pace an ascent, how to handle altitude sickness. Reputable operators require certifications such as a Basic or Advanced Mountaineering Course and wilderness first aid, and keep a leader-to-trekker ratio appropriate to the route.
The base office usually learns what is happening on a trek only when the leader calls. Anything that gives the office visibility, such as check-ins at camps and a working SOS path, reduces that gap.
On a live trip
The leader carries the batch roster, permit list, medical notes and emergency contacts, and runs headcounts at every exposed section and camp.
