Trip captain
The staff member responsible for a departure on the ground: headcounts, announcements, hotel check-ins and the first response to any problem.
What is Trip captain?
Also called tour manager, tour leader or escort. The captain runs the plan live, holds the roster and rooming list, deals with hotels and drivers, and is the person travellers come to. On treks the equivalent is the trek leader, with added responsibility for route and safety decisions.
A captain's day is shaped by how much the operator has prepared. With a clear itinerary, a finalised rooming list and a traveller app that answers routine questions, the captain manages the trip. Without them, the captain is the itinerary, the room directory and the help desk.
On a live trip
Give the captain one tool with the roster, itinerary, rooming and headcount in it, and a way to broadcast to the group that does not depend on everyone reading a chat.
