Batch
A trek or adventure operator's word for a departure: one group on one set of dates on a fixed route.
What is Batch?
Trek operators in India talk about batches rather than departures. The route and camps are fixed; the batch is the group of travellers starting on a given date with their trek leader. Popular routes run multiple batches a day in season, each capped by permits and camp capacity.
Batch size is a safety decision as much as a commercial one. Smaller batches mean more trek leaders per traveller and easier headcounts on exposed sections.
On a live trip
Each batch carries its own roster, permit list and headcount log. Reusing last week's batch sheet with a few names changed is how people get missed.
