DLT (SMS template registration)
TRAI's Distributed Ledger Technology framework under which businesses in India register sender headers and SMS templates before sending commercial messages.
What is DLT (SMS template registration)?
Under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018, any business sending SMS to Indian numbers must register as a principal entity on a telecom operator's DLT platform, register its sender headers and the exact text of each message template, and have each template approved before use. Messages that do not match an approved template are blocked.
For a trip operator this affects invites, OTPs and emergency alerts. A new wording, or a link to a domain that is not whitelisted in the template, can silently fail until the template is updated and re-approved.
On a live trip
Any SMS your trip depends on, such as a traveller invite or an SOS alert to an emergency contact, rests on an approved DLT template. Treat template changes as a release, not a copy edit.
