Sub-group
A named set of 8 to 10 travellers within a large group, each with a buddy or sub-leader, so headcounts and movement are manageable.
What is Sub-group?
Groups above about 15 are hard to count as individuals, especially on a trail or at a crowded site. Splitting into sub-groups with a stable membership lets captains count sub-groups and lets each sub-leader know their own people by face.
Sub-groups also give travellers a smaller unit to belong to, which matters on student trips and treks where the buddy system is the first line of safety.
On a live trip
Assign sub-groups on the roster before departure and keep them stable. A headcount of "four sub-groups, all complete" is faster and more reliable than counting forty heads.
