Glossary
Pax
Industry shorthand for passengers or travellers, used to count the people on a booking, bus, room or departure.
What is Pax?
Pax comes from passengers and is used across hotels, transport and tour operations as the unit for people. A booking for "12 pax" is a booking for twelve travellers. Hotels quote per pax or per room, buses are sized in pax, and trek permits are issued for a stated number of pax.
The word hides a trap: a pax count is only useful when everyone agrees what it includes. Captains, drivers and guides are usually counted separately from paying pax, and infants are often excluded from transport counts but included in hotel counts.
On a live trip
Your expected pax per departure is the number every headcount is checked against. Write it down per day; it changes when someone leaves early or a staff member joins.
